NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course (Instructor Led)

The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting is intended for all individuals regardless of previous shooting experience or NRA-affiliation.  NRA Pistol Instructor Candidates must complete the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting (Instructor Led Only) Course to be Certified as an NRA Pistol Instructor.  The Instructor Led Only training takes place in a classroom type and range environments where you will receive direct instruction from an NRA-certified instructor from beginning to end.

More Details: Course topics include gun safety rules, proper operation of revolvers and semi-automatic pistols, ammunition knowledge and selection, pistol selection and storage, shooting fundamentals, pistol inspection and maintenance, marksmanship, and shooting range safety. Additionally, students will complete live fire training and a nationally standardized shooting qualification while on the range with an NRA Certified Instructor. Students will receive the NRA Guide: Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination and receive a course completion certificate bearing the signature of the NRA Secretary and your NRA Certified Instructor.

This Course:

  • Taught by a Certified NRA Pistol Instructor
  • Requires 8 hours classroom instruction (based on size of group & includes range time)
  • Requires passing written exam with minimum score of 90 (max five attempts to achieve a passing score)
  • Requires meeting the minimum of completing Level 1 shooting & demonstrate proper safe firearm handling skills to earn a Basic Pistol Course Completion Certificate
  • Level 1 Red is four five shot groups within a 4-inch circle (total 20 shots) at 10 Feet Standing
  • Level 2 White is four five shot groups within a 4-inch circle (total 20 shots) at 15 Feet Standing
  • Level 3 Blue is four five shot groups within a 4-inch circle (total 20 shots) at 20 Feet Standing
  • Level 4 Instructor Level Qualification is 20 shots (16 of 20 within a 6-inch shot group) at 45 Feet Standing

Tuition:

  • Private One-On-One – $250.00 ($150 deposit) Balance paid prior to start of training
  • Private Groups up to (2 to 3) – $175.00 per student ($100 deposit) Balance paid prior to start of training
  • Public Groups up to (3 to 10) – $150.00 per student ($75 deposit), Balance paid prior to commandment of training

  • 8 hours classroom instructions (includes range time)
  • NRA Basic Pistol Student Handbook
  • NRA Basic Pistol Student Written Examination
  • NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Target
  • Shooting Range Fee ($18 value)

Tuition Does Not Include:

  • Handgun (.22 caliber or larger authorized)
  • Ammunition (100 rounds minimum to qualify) – No Reloads Authorized for Safety & Reliability

What to Bring:

  • Texas Driver’s License or Texas State ID

  • Eye Protection (reading glasses or prescription glasses are authorized)
  • Baseball Cap (to keep hot expended cartridges from landing between you and your eye protection)

  • Button-Up Shirt (long sleeve)

Qualification Test Requirements:
Minimum Score of 90% on Written Examination (max five attempts to achieve a passing score)
Minimum Completion of Level 1 and Demonstrate Proper Safe Firearm Handling Skills

Level 1 (Red) – 10 Feet Standing (3.33 Yards) – 20 Rounds

  • 4 five shot groups within a 4-inch circle

Level 2 (White) – 15 Feet Standing (5 Yards) – 20 Rounds

  • 4 five shot groups within a 4-inch circle

Level 3 (Blue) – 20 Feet Standing (6.66 Yards) – 20 Rounds

  • 4 five shot groups within a 4-inch circle

Level 4 (Instructor Qualification Level) – 45 Feet Standing (15 Yards) – 20 Rounds

  • 16 of 20 shots within a 6-inch shot group
