Texas License To Carry (LTC) Classes

This class provides the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) required classroom training and firearm qualification students need in order to obtain a Texas License to Carry a Handgun (LTC).  Upon completion of this course students will receive a Form LTC-100 Certification of Training signed by a Certified DPS LTC Instructor.

NOTE:  This LTC class is not intended to train students how to shoot a handgun.  The qualification test portion of the course is required by the State of Texas for the student to demonstrate their ability to safely and properly handle and shoot a handgun.  If shooting proficiency training is required, please see our Private One-On-One Training.

This Course:

  • Taught by a Texas DPS Certified LTC Instructor
  • Requires 4 to 6 hours classroom instructions (time based on size of group & includes range time)
  • Requires administered DPS written exam (minimum score of 70 to pass – 25 questions)
  • Requires administered DPS shooting proficiency qualification (minimum score of 70% – 50 shots or 175 points out of possible 250 points to pass) Shooting range time is based on size of group

Texas License To Carry (LTC) Online Student (Shooting Qualification Only)

The LTC Online Student Shooting Qualification only is for those students who have completed the Texas LTC Online class had will need to complete the shooting proficiency with an DPS Certified LTC Instructor in person.  The LTC Online Student must have a signed Form LTC-101 from a DPS Certified LTC Instructor indicating that all classroom instructions have been completed.

NOTE:  This LTC class is not intended to train students how to shoot a handgun.  The qualification test portion of the course is required by the State of Texas for the student to demonstrate their ability to safely and properly handle and shoot a handgun.  If shooting proficiency training is required, please see our Private One-On-One Training.

Shooting Qualification Only:

  • Administered by a Texas DPS Certified LTC Instructor
  • Requires Online Students provide a signed Form LTC-101 Certificate of Training Completion
  • Requires administered DPS shooting proficiency qualification (minimum score of 70% – 50 shots or 175 points out of possible 250 points to pass) Shooting range time is based on size of group

NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course (Instructor Led)

The NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting is intended for all individuals regardless of previous shooting experience or NRA-affiliation.  NRA Pistol Instructor Candidates must complete the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting (Instructor Led Only) Course to be Certified as an NRA Pistol Instructor.  The Instructor Led Only training takes place in a classroom type and range environments where you will receive direct instruction from an NRA-certified instructor from beginning to end.

More Details: Course topics include gun safety rules, proper operation of revolvers and semi-automatic pistols, ammunition knowledge and selection, pistol selection and storage, shooting fundamentals, pistol inspection and maintenance, marksmanship, and shooting range safety. Additionally, students will complete live fire training and a nationally standardized shooting qualification while on the range with an NRA Certified Instructor. Students will receive the NRA Guide: Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination and receive a course completion certificate bearing the signature of the NRA Secretary and your NRA Certified Instructor.

This Course:

  • Taught by a Certified NRA Pistol Instructor
  • Requires 8 hours classroom instruction (based on size of group & includes range time)
  • Requires passing written exam with minimum score of 90 (max five attempts to achieve a passing score)
  • Requires meeting the minimum of completing Level 1 shooting & demonstrate proper safe firearm handling skills to earn a Basic Pistol Course Completion Certificate
  • Level 1 Red is four five shot groups within a 4-inch circle (total 20 shots) at 10 Feet Standing
  • Level 2 White is four five shot groups within a 4-inch circle (total 20 shots) at 15 Feet Standing
  • Level 3 Blue is four five shot groups within a 4-inch circle (total 20 shots) at 20 Feet Standing
  • Level 4 Instructor Level Qualification is 20 shots (16 of 20 within a 6-inch shot group) at 45 Feet Standing

Introduction To Handguns

Introduction To Handguns is intended for New Handgun Owners, the Novice to Intermediate.  Introduction to Handguns covers Handgun Basics, Handgun Safety, and Handgun Shooting.  This class helps students become more confident in their abilities in handling & shooting a handgun.  The class is taught by a Certified Texas DPS LTC Instructor who is also a Certified NRA Pistol Instructor who will take the time to educate & explain shooting techniques that will help the student gain confidence in handgun safety & handling and shooting proficiency.  Introduction To Handguns is the first step towards preparing for the Texas License To Carry (LTC) Course.

More Details: Class topics include Fundamentals of Shooting, Handgun Safety & Handling, Shooting Range Etiquette, Handgun types (revolvers & semi-automatic), Handgun Ammunition, Shooting Stance, Shooting Grip, Proper Aiming, Breathing Control, Trigger Control.  During live fire training students will demonstrate proper shooting stance, shooting grip, aiming on the target and trigger (squeeze) control with a live firearm.  The length of time target shooting will be determined on the amount of ammunition expended.

This Class:

  • Taught by a Texas DPS Certified LTC Instructor
  • Classroom instruction is scheduled for 3 hours (based on size of group & does not include range time)
  • Shooting Range is scheduled for 1 hour (based on size of group) about 50 rounds of target shooting per hour
  • Additional shooting range instruction time is available at an additional hourly rate
  • Classes are tailored to the experience level and goals of the student or group
  • This class is the first step in preparing for a Texas License To Carry (LTC) Certification
